Summary

Nine-year-old Alice Hart grows up in an isolated, idyllic home between sugar cane fields and the sea, where her mother's enchanting flowers and their hidden messages shelter her from the dark moods of her father。 When tragedy irrevocably changes her life, Alice goes to live with the grandmother she never knew existed, on an Australian native flower farm that gives refuge to women who, like Alice, are lost or broken。 In the Victorian tradition, every flower has a meaning and, as she settles into her new life, Alice uses this language of native flowers to say the things that are too hard to speak。

As she grows older, family secrecy, a devastating betrayal and a man who's not all he seems combine to make Alice realise there are some stories that flowers alone cannot tell。 If she is to have the freedom she craves, she must find the courage to possess the most powerful story she knows: her own。

Knygoje labai daug australietiškos gamtos grožio。 Kiekvienas skyrius prasideda tam tikros gėlės paveiksliuku ir aprašymu, o aš pradėdama jį skaityti dar pagooglindavau, kaip realybėj tas vaizdas atrodo。 Žavi ir pagirtina autorės idėja。Pati istorija paprasta, bet ne prasta。 Pilna skaudulių, nesusikalbėjimų ir visokių nutylėjimų。 Skaitosi maloniai ir įtraukiančiai。 Gana holivudinė ir nuspėjama。 Pabaiga manęs irgi neįtikino。 Viskas sudėliota gražiai, teisingai, bet kažkaip nelabai įdomiai。 Matyt, k Knygoje labai daug australietiškos gamtos grožio。 Kiekvienas skyrius prasideda tam tikros gėlės paveiksliuku ir aprašymu, o aš pradėdama jį skaityti dar pagooglindavau, kaip realybėj tas vaizdas atrodo。 Žavi ir pagirtina autorės idėja。Pati istorija paprasta, bet ne prasta。 Pilna skaudulių, nesusikalbėjimų ir visokių nutylėjimų。 Skaitosi maloniai ir įtraukiančiai。 Gana holivudinė ir nuspėjama。 Pabaiga manęs irgi neįtikino。 Viskas sudėliota gražiai, teisingai, bet kažkaip nelabai įdomiai。 Matyt, kad per daug teigiamai 😀Visumoj-patiko。 Tikrai neblogas romanas。 。。。more

What an incredible read! I was hooked from the title and the story did not disappoint! It was dramatic and fun and such beautiful storytelling。 I was thinking a lot about the characters and I got really invested in their stories, particularly Alice and Candy Baby I just wanted a happy ending after all that sorrow for them。 I would absolutely read it again and I mean just reading about such passion for flowers and botany made me rekindle my interest in gardening。 I have two big tomato plants now What an incredible read! I loved the premise of this book - a language spoken through flowers。The book had always captivated me from the cover (i know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover), but its gold and has gorgeous native flowers all over it。Alice's story was an easy read, and finished it in a couple of days。The flowers shone through trauma, abuse, life & love。The sketches of flowers throughout at the start of each chapter, and a description of them made me feel very patriotic, part of Australia, and where they I loved the premise of this book - a language spoken through flowers。The book had always captivated me from the cover (i know, you shouldn't judge a book by its cover), but its gold and has gorgeous native flowers all over it。Alice's story was an easy read, and finished it in a couple of days。The flowers shone through trauma, abuse, life & love。The sketches of flowers throughout at the start of each chapter, and a description of them made me feel very patriotic, part of Australia, and where they're from。I had a feeling it would end a certain way, and for part of it, I did predict, but was surprised it ended the way it did。Definitely recommend - and i might even use the 'language of flowers' to speak for me from now on too。 。。。more

This book was a beautiful tale of nature and traditions。 I loved learning about native Australian flowers and feeling the deep connection Alice’s family and friends had to the earth。 The book had a remarkable first half, but lagged in the remainder- introducing new characters and settings when the plot should have been wrapping up。 I think it would have been better if Alice learned from each Flower- they’re background, words of wisdom, and the power to overcome。

“𝙷𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚊𝚐𝚎, 𝚝𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝。” This is a compelling tale from the start, where we meet 9 year old Alice dreaming of ways to set her father, a violent and volatile man, on fire。 When tragedy strikes, Alice is forced to move from her secluded world to live with her grandmother, June, who owns a native flower farm where she learns the language of flowers。A story about fires, flowers and family ties, it is a coming of age tale spanning two decades。 The storytelling is beautiful and vivid as we are over “𝙷𝚊𝚟𝚎 𝚌𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚊𝚐𝚎, 𝚝𝚊𝚔𝚎 𝚑𝚎𝚊𝚛𝚝。” This is a compelling tale from the start, where we meet 9 year old Alice dreaming of ways to set her father, a violent and volatile man, on fire。 When tragedy strikes, Alice is forced to move from her secluded world to live with her grandmother, June, who owns a native flower farm where she learns the language of flowers。A story about fires, flowers and family ties, it is a coming of age tale spanning two decades。 The storytelling is beautiful and vivid as we are overwhelmed by imagery of flowers, fires and fragrances throughout the book。 Young Alice's viewpoint in the first half was poetic, even when dealing with horrors。 Second half with adult Alice took a turn I wasn’t expecting。𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝙸 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎𝚍:• The portrayal of strong female characters。 Though battling their own inner struggles, they help to build community and support and uplift other women• The beautiful floral introductions, providing a unique opportunity to learn about native Australian flowers• Lush descriptions of landscapes painted with an ethereal quality• The delicate handling of domestic abuse𝚆𝚑𝚊𝚝 𝙸 𝚍𝚒𝚍𝚗'𝚝 𝚕𝚘𝚟𝚎:• Overly flowery language in the first half。 While poetic, after a certain point it felt forced and overused• The stifling secrecy throughout the entire book (read, June’s secrecy drove me up the wall!)• Unnecessary drama by characters not talking to one another• Too many characters and too many backstories competing for attentionA commendable debut novel (soon to be brought to life on screen) that explores the themes of domestic violence, death, grief, family secrecy and redemption。 The irony was that for all the language of the flowers, what's truly important remains unsaid and shrouded in secrecy。 。。。more

I read this book as part of a group buddy read with all the lovely Booksta accounts tagged。 At one end of the group we had a DNF (did not finish) and then the majority enjoyed, if not loved the book。 I am more on the side of "meh", would I read this again? Nope, don't think I could。 Did it have some little gems in there? The beginning of this book was inviting, captivating, romantic。 I liked that at the start of each chapter there was a sketch of a flower and a description, I thought that I was a lovely touch and so I really enjoyed the initial build-up of this book and the mystery behind it。 However I soon began to resent the main character and the other characters as well for being so feeble。 The story began to drag and go off-track, it became a struggle for me to read it through to the end。 The ending itself The beginning of this book was inviting, captivating, romantic。 I liked that at the start of each chapter there was a sketch of a flower and a description, I thought that I was a lovely touch and so I really enjoyed the initial build-up of this book and the mystery behind it。 However I soon began to resent the main character and the other characters as well for being so feeble。 The story began to drag and go off-track, it became a struggle for me to read it through to the end。 The ending itself seemed hasty which was rather unsatisfying。。。so in all honesty it was disappointing。 。。。more
